FAQ

Questions Parents Ask

Everything your family needs to know before the first morning bell at Camp Chodikee.

Common questions

Does my child need to know how to swim?

All campers complete a swim assessment on the first day. Non-swimmers and beginners participate in structured swim instruction during waterfront periods and wear life jackets during boating activities. We do not exclude any camper from the lake. We teach them to be safe in it.

What watercraft experience does my child need?

None. All waterfront programs start at the absolute beginner level. Sailing, kayaking, and canoeing instructors are trained to work with first-timers. Returning campers advance through our certification ladder each session based on demonstrated skill.

How do you handle homesickness?

Homesickness is normal and expected, especially in the first two days. Our counselors are trained to recognize it and work through it with campers using structured routines, cabin group connection, and gentle engagement. We contact parents only when homesickness does not resolve within 48 hours. Most campers are running for the dock by day three.

Can my child contact me during the session?

Campers write and receive physical mail, and we post a weekly photo update to the parent portal. Phone calls home are reserved for documented medical or emotional needs. Research consistently shows that campers who are not in daily contact with home adjust faster and have a better summer.

What should my child pack?

A full packing list is sent after enrollment. The essentials: water shoes, a rash guard, SPF 50+ sunscreen, a sleeping bag rated to 50 degrees, a flashlight, a rain jacket, and comfortable clothes you do not mind getting muddy. Please label everything with your child's first and last name.

What is the medical care situation?

A registered nurse is on site 24 hours a day for the full duration of every session. We have a relationship with a local pediatrician's office for anything that needs a clinic visit. All health information is reviewed before campers arrive and shared with the nurse and your child's counselor.

How are cabin groups formed?

Cabin groups are formed by age and session. You may request a cabin grouping with one friend; we honor one mutual request per camper when submitted with enrollment. Cabin groups of ten share one counselor and one junior counselor for the full session.

What is the cancellation and refund policy?

Cancellations received 60 or more days before the session start date receive a full refund less the $500 enrollment deposit. Cancellations within 60 days receive a credit equal to the tuition paid, valid for the following summer. Credits may be transferred to a sibling.
